Cancer Gene Identified

"Researchers have discovered a gene that may be responsible for the spread of cancer in the body and, when blocked, could stop cancer in its tracks. The new research could result in medicines that diminish the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body and provide new treatment options for 80 percent of all cancers, scientists say.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia in Norwich have found an enzymic bonding agent called WWP2 inside cancer cells. This "rogue gene" attacks and breaks down a naturally occurring protein called Smad7, which usually prevents cancer cells from spreading."
