From Congresswoman
Jackie Speier

My partner, Eric, has a new found respect for California Congresswoman
Jackie Speier. This week he watched a documentary about the Jonestown,
Guyana tragedy 30 years ago, something that interests him because of
an unusual connection to Jim Jones -- Eric's mom grew up in the same
neighborhood as Jim Jones' wife, Marcelline, and his mom can remember
a young Jim Jones and his pet monkey visiting his wife to be. In the
disturbing documentary, my partner learned that Jackie Speier, aide to
slain Congressman Leo Ryan, was also caught in the gunfire ambush and
left to die laying on a jungle airstrip for 22 hours before help came.
Not only did she survive, but she became a successful California state
rep and now is representing California in the U.S. Congress. Added
bonus: she supports same-sex marriage, saying "Marriage equality is
perhaps the most profound civil rights issue of our generation."
