Flying Robot WiFi Network

"Relying on algorithms created to render flocks of birds in computer graphics, engineers have created flying robots that travel in swarms. The light (15-ounce), mostly foam, propeller-driven craft fly to an assigned GPS coordinate and circle, communicating with their nearest neighbors—not the whole flock—using Wi-Fi and an onboard Linux computer. When researchers transmit a new destination, the robots make individual decisions about course while maintaining a stable distance from their peers; a complex aerial dance ensues as they turn. Robot teams can be cheaper than larger drones, and more robots can be assigned to a project if it expands. The technology was developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology."
