Caramel

"Caramel, a sensual and romantic film concentrates on five women at a local beauty salon.

Nadine Labaki makes her directorial debut and also stars as a Christian beautician who's obsessed with her married lover’s wife. Joining her is a salon employee anguishing over her attraction to women (particularly one client with long black hair), a soon-to-be-Muslim-bride terrified her husband will discover she isn’t a virgin on her wedding night, a woman struggling to age gracefully, and an elderly lady longing for elusive love.

Labaki doesn’t exactly break new ground here, but she also doesn’t preach while touching upon some of the issues that both Christian and Muslim women face in this complicated and cosmopolitan little country. The performances are touching and natural, and the cinematography’s golden glow suits the movie’s title perfectly."
